Probiotic Buying Guide

Deciding which probiotic to buy? This guide aims to provide you with all the advice and information to make the right choices when buying a probiotic supplement.

In order to cure candida overgrowth you might need to take significant doses of probiotics to replenish what would naturally exist in a healthy body.

Over the past few years the probiotic market has experienced a rapid growth. Probiotic products have emerged in sectors such as breakfast cereals, milk, functional drinks, cheese, and cookies.

While some of these health ‘packages’ are interesting, the danger is that they will simply confuse the consumer. The purpose of this article is to help you choose the right probiotic supplement to effectively cure your yeast infection.

Which Probiotic is Right for You?

One lesson I learned as a former yeast infection sufferer is that not all probiotics are created equal. Some are useless, some are better, but only few of them stand out from the rest. Here are 5 tips to consider when choosing a probiotic supplement:

1. Buy Products with Clinically Proven Results

Some products contain numerous strains that have no safe-use history in human nutrition. Using such products can lead to further health problems. This is why your probiotic supplement should contain only cultures tested in clinical trials – some of them are listed below:

  • Lactobacillus acidophilus
  • Bacillus coagulans
  • Bifidobacterium bifidum
  • Bifidobacterium longum
  • Lactobacillus rhamnosus
  • Lactobacillus casei
  • Lactobacillus Plantarum

2. Take a Sufficient Amount

Probiotics must be taken in high enough populations to have a profound impact on health. However, more CFU (colony forming units) doesn’t necessarily mean better – CFU amount should be the same as that shown to be effective in clinical studies.

  • 2-10 billion CFU daily is usually protective and preventive
  • 10-30 billion CFU should be sufficient if you’ve been on antibiotics or are recovering from illness

Remember that for a major health problem you need to be guided by your personal health professional.

Tip: Look for supplements that clearly state each dose’s CFU. Avoid those that list ingredients only by weight.

3. Look for an Effective Probiotic

Signs of an effective probiotic:

  • able to survive the journey through the stomach acid
  • able to attach itself to the intestinal wall
  • able to colonise and grow in the human gastrointestinal tract
  • able to reduce the growth of pathogenic bacteria

How to determine the quality of your probiotic? One of the best and easiest ways is to read customer reviews…

4. Read Online Reviews

Genuine and unbiased opinions of real people who have tried the product before you can help you make an informed decision about what is best for you.

  • Has the product actually helped others?
  • Does it sound too good to be true?
  • Are there any side effects I should be aware of?

These are questions you should ask yourself before purchasing any supplement.

Bio-Kult Candéa contains probiotic bacteria with added garlic and grapefruit seed extract.

5. The Brands Matter…

Here is a list of the most popular probiotic supplements:

Digestive tract comprises approximately 70 percent of the body’s immune system. By keeping the gut healthy and immune system strong you will be well on your way to cure your yeast infection.

Have you heard or tried Reuteri?

Yes, I’ve heard about it.

It seems that not many people have used it to treat Candida, though.

Has anyone tried Renew Life for candida?

I would really appreciate a recommendation that has numbers of organisms attached. You say that the amounts need to be in the billions, but the only pills I’ve ever seen are in the millions. That’s a huge difference. I would have to take about 30 pills a day to get the 3 billion recommended dose. The only probiotic products I have seen numbering billions are liquids, but you say I need capsules to keep the bacteria alive through the digestive tract. Additionally, the products you direct me to on Amazon don’t list number of organisms, so I would be buying blind. Finally, I find customer reviews to be counterproductive. They will always have both negative and positive and sorting out who knows what they are talking about is impossible. Care to give some additional advice on where I can find a proper probiotic?

Hi Alice,

The purpose of this brief guide is to give readers general guidelines and list the most popular probiotic products. As you can see from the customer reviews on Amazon, what works for one, might not always work for others.

You can easily find probiotics numbering billions – for example, Garden of Life Ultra capsules contain 5 billion CFU. The regular version listed in this article contains 2 billion. This information is available on the internet.

As for the Acidophilus Pearls, the product description on Amazon clearly states that “Each pearl provides 1 billion CFU of a proprietary probiotic blend”.

The manufacturers tend to change their formulas quite often and for this reason we do not provide exact numbers.

Your doctor can also provide useful information on where you can find a proper probiotic.

Hope this helps! Thanks for your question.

Hi, I’m just beginning to understand the connection. PBS had a nurse/nutritionist that explained the principles about intestinal health. She recommended:

- look for at least 13 billion cultures in enteric coating
- remember to look for L’s and B’s in the list of cultures to be surer of appropriate strains.

I did the sputum test and mine sank and looked like a little jelly-fish, as anticipated. My eyes and sinuses are “dry” often. Generally, I feel like I’ve got pressure inside from too many unwanted tenants. But I go to my D.O. and she has run tests and finds me generally “healthy” for 63.

Many of these products run $150 to $200 per supplement set in the Candida programs that I’ve researched. I’m still game but want to make a thoroughly informed decision. I’m on a fixed income which severly limits my ability to afford the complete “set” all at once. Is there a reasonable starting place?
